Week 11 - Mon Lecture

We discussed the final exam today in class. Be sure you get the information if you missed it. In particular, the take-home part is timed, and there is BOTH an in-class and take-home exam.

Today's quiz was a take-home quiz. If you missed class, email Gregg for a copy of the quiz. It is due tomorrow. Late papers will be except with a -75% penalty...so you probably don't want to forget to bring the quiz tomorrow to class.

It was also mentioned that I cannot give extensions for reading assignments that are past due.

Start of week 9

There will be a short reading assignment for chapters 5-7 of Fermat's Enigma...it should be posted later today.

The next set of reading assignments are optional...but I strongly encourage you to try them. These will be from The Lady Tasting Tea. I will post them over the next couple of days. The will be extra credit, and will count half of a regular RA (i.e., 1 point per problem instead of 2).

The next unit we will start is on statistics. Please read the first two sections of chapter 13 from the textbook.

Saturday, February 28

End of week 8

The W-date has passed. At this point, you are in the course for good.

The homework is up, and the quiz will cover clock-arithmetic. I will be unavailable for the rest of this weekend. So, if you have questions, please use the wamap forum discussion board.

Friday, February 20

End of Week 7

Here are a couple of announcements:
* the quiz on Mon will cover dividing complex numbers and infinities

There is an additional reading passage to help with infinities:
click here. This will help explain the concept of cardinality and will discuss the Zeus/Apollo competition.

The 2 reading assignments due on Monday are Chpts 1 & 2 from Fermat's Enigma. Please read up through chapter 4 for the start of next week.

Tuesday, February 17

The Golden Ratio Reading Assignments...

The Reading Assignments for The Golden Ratio have now been graded. If you would like to contest the grade for a specific question, provide a rationale and reference the page(s) and paragraph(s) in the book supporting your rationale. Email this information to me in a bulleted list for each assignment, and I will review them. I will accept emails through this Friday, and will review them this weekend. If you need an extension on a past reading assignment, your grade will be based on how the system grades your answers...I will not revisit any late RAs for the first book.

At this point, you should have read the first three chapters of Fermat's Enigma. We will talk more about complex arithmetic tomorrow.

Week 4 Announcements

First, there is a great opportunity to hear (and possibly meet) Mario Livio. He will be at the Seattle Town Hall on Mon 2/2 from 7:30. Tickets are $5 and you can earn bonus points on your next quiz.

At this time, you should be finished reading The Golden Ratio. We will start Fermat's Enigma next week.

There is no class next Tue (2/2). However, we will be changing the course schedule next week to accomodate this. The quiz will be moved to Tue, and will be a take-home quiz (timed) that you will complete on WAMAP. We will use Mon for an extra lecture to finish sequences.

Saturday, January 24

End of Week 3 (attempt #2)

Three things:
1. The reading for next week is chapters 6-9 of TGR.

2. Remember that you CANNOT request wamap extenions before the due date has passed. This means you must EMAIL me AFTER the due date has passed. I will not respond to invalid requests for the rest of the quarter.

3. The bonus question from last quiz is this:
Show all your work for these calculations:
a. 5632 + 3265 = ?
b. 5632 – 3265 = ?
However, the twist is that these numbers are all BASE-8 numbers.

DO NOT POST THE ANSWER TO THIS BONUS QUESTION! NOT HERE & NOT ON WAMAP!

Tuesday, January 20

Wk 3 Tue's class

Please start reading chapters 4 & 5. (Have them read by class on Wed 1/21.)

Remember, WAMAP extensions can be granted only if requested AFTER the due date and via EMAIL.

Saturday, January 10

Fri Class

Today we worked on a group activity. If you did not finish during class, it can be completed outside of class and turned in on Monday. Be sure to turn in one (AND ONLY ONE) paper per group, and be sure everyone's name is on the paper.

The quiz on Monday will cover all of the WAMAP assignments (except #7 & #8 on Asmt Wk 1 #1).

Finally, start reading chapters 1-3 of the Golden Ratio. This is the material we will start next week. There will be an online reading assignment on these chapters over the next few days.
